(SPOT.ph) Diplomacy is a delicate balancing act that requires one to master having a spine and advocating for the interests and welfare of one’s country without ruffling the feathers of other countries or inadvertently initiating hostilities. Such a precarious task requires a deft hand and a steady temperament, and on October 23, broadcaster and newspaper columnist Ramon Tulfo was officially appointed as President Rodrigo Duterte’s special envoy for public diplomacy to China.

Previously rumored to be eyeing a seat in the Senate, Tulfo will be serving as special envoy for six months, which he stated was his idea in his October 6 column. He cited his experience in mediating between feuding individuals and expressed interest in bringing in Chinese investors to boost agriculture and fishing in the Philippines, whose permits he said he could facilitate because he and his staff have been “bypassing bureaucratic red tape” for years to help Filipinos in Arab countries. He concluded by declaring that he was actually a peacemaker and not the hothead that he has been portrayed as, most recently by him when he uploaded a video of him confronting doctors at the Philippine General Hospital.
Tulfo also stated he could engage in backchannel efforts in the event of diplomatic issues between the Philippines and China. He should have a lot on his plate then for the next six months.
