It currently takes an hour and a half to get from Bicutan in Taguig to Batasan in Quezon City. Well, at least according to Google Maps. But let's be real: It definitely takes more time than that. An hour and a half will only get you as far as Mandaluyong on a good day (a.k.a. when the traffic isn't that bad).

This long travel time is why the Department of Public Works and Highways and the Department of Transportation's Toll Regulatory Board are currently working on the Southeast Metro Manila Expressway, which is also known as the C6 Expressway Project. After construction, it's expected to cut the travel time down to just 35 minutes.

The expressway will provide an alternate route for motorists to decongest EDSA, C5 and other major roads of Metro Manila and Rizal. It will run from Parañaque City to Quezon City and pass through the developing areas of Taguig, Taytay, Antipolo, and San Mateo.

The P31.3-billion project is a six-lane expressway with a length of 34 kilometers. It will be divided into two segments and six sections, starting from Skyway to FTI in Taguig and ending at Tumana Bridge in Marikina to Batasan Complex in Quezon City. The first phase is expected to be completed by 2020.

Officials of the Department of Transportation, Department of Public Works and Highways and representatives from San Miguel Corporation led the groundbreaking of the Southeast Metro Manila Expressway on January 8, 2018

San Miguel Corporation unit Citra Intercity Tollways Incorporated is the selected concessionaire of the project, according to the DPWH website. “We hope to start construction in April 2018, but Secretary Tugade wants us to start earlier. What we can say is that we will do our best to make this possible at the soonest possible time,” says SMC Engineer Norberto Conti.

The project complements another San Miguel toll road project, the Metro Manila Skyway Stage 3 project, which also aims to build another link between the southern and northern ends of Metro Manila.
