Third time was not quite the charm for Philippine team mainstay Treat Huey.
The former world No. 18 doubles player and partner Sem Verbeek of the Netherlands fell short of a finals appearance after falling in the semifinals of the €44,800 Biella Challenger Indoor 1 on Friday, February 12.
The unseeded Filipino and Dutch tandem got the boot in straight sets from the 2nd seeded pair of Luis David Martinez of Venezuela and David Vega Hernandez of Spain, 7-5, 6-3, in the €44,800 ATP Challenger event held at the hard courts of Biella, Italy.
Huey and Verbeek had their chances in the opening set after going up a couple of break points.
Martinez and Hernandez, however, proved to be resolute as they held serve the entire 1st set to seize the advantage, 6-5. Huey and Verbeek went up 40-30 in the 12th game but could not close out on their serve as Martinez and Hernandez finally were able to break and win the set, 7-5.
The 2nd set was dominated by the 2nd seeds as they broke Huey and Verbeek early to go up 4-1. It was too much of a hole for Huey and Verbeek to climb out as Martinez and Hernandez held on to win the set and the match.
Martinez and Hernandez will move on to the finals where they will face another unseeded duo, Szymon Walkow and Jan Zielinski of Poland.
The Biella Challenger was the third time in 3 weeks that Huey and Verbeek reached the semifinals of the ATP Challenger Tour.
The two also made the semifinals of the MTA Open and the Club Megasaray Open held in Antalya, Turkey.
Huey and Verbeek will get another shot at a title as they are scheduled to join the ATP Biella Challenger Indoor 2 which is slated to run from February 15-21. – Rappler.com
