(SPOT.ph) Except for our terracotta jars and kitchenware, ceramic art in the Philippines is a fairly new discipline that there's only a handful of artists that have mastered this craft. Filipino potter Joey De Castro is one of the few that have toiled day and night to create clay from scratch, fill up his firing kiln with ceramic, and do the math behind the whole process. "Engineering helped me understand and develop my own glazes and firing techniques," he tells SPOT.ph in an interview about the connection between his background in applied science and his current career in the arts.

On July 22, he opened Sierra Madre Gallery in Mandaluyong, which he hopes will be the home of ceramic art in the Philippines one day. Its inaugural exhibit, Score and Slip, showcases works by Thai and Filipino ceramic artists. More shows are lined up in the coming months, including De Castro's solo show in November. You can also sign up for pottery classes at his studio.

Sierra Madre Gallery is open by appointment Mondays to Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. It is at 7/F NCC Building, 586 Sierra Madre Street, Mandaluyong City. For inquiries, follow Joey De Castro Pottery on Facebook.
