(SPOT.ph) Much has been written about the apparition of the Virgin of Guadalupe in the 1500s. Julie Borromeo Arts Foundation presents this story with an original play entitled Guadalupe: The Musical. The play is set to open on September 29.

The play retells the story of how the Virgin of Guadalupe appeared to a simple Mexican farmer, Juan Diego,. When supernatural events start to happen, the faith of Juan Diego and the townspeople of Guadalupe are tested. The narrative also explores the different miracles that occurred during that time, including the healing of sick people and the painted image of the Virgin appearing in an apron.

Guadalupe: The Musical stars stage icon Cocoy Laurel as Juan Diego. At the helm of the production are scriptwriter and lyricist Joel Trinidad and composer Ejay Yatco.

Behind this production are theater legends Julie Borromeo and Baby Barredo, who share that while the story is about Mary and miracles, it’s not considered a conventional faith-based show.

“It’s not a ‘religious’ musical as such. It’s a powerful piece of theater that just happens to contain religious elements,” Barredo said, who is also directing the play.

Guadalupe: The Musical runs from September 29 to October 14 at the Meralco Theater, Ortigas Center, Pasig City. For more information, visit Julie Borromeo Arts Foundation’s Facebook page.
