(SPOT.ph) Movie buffs are only a few more weeks away until the highly anticipated Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral premieres on September 5. The movie—in case you didn't already know—is a sequel to the successful historical epic, Heneral Luna, which hit theaters on September 9, 2015. It's been three long years since the first movie came out, and fans might want a quick refresher before they watch Paulo Avelino take center stage as Gregorio del Pilar and continue where Heneral Luna left off. And that's exactly what they're getting when Heneral Luna returns to the big screen on August 29.
Heneral Luna tells the story of General Antonio Luna (John Arcilla), who was one of the leaders during the Philippine-American War. It became the highest grossing historical film in the Philippines when it made P172 million on its fourth week in theaters. It eventually became the highest earning independent film with P256 million (eventually topped by Kita Kita's P320 million in 2017). It was also selected as the Philippines' entry for the Best Foreign Language Film award at the 88th Academy Awards, though it didn't make it to the shortlist.
Heneral Luna's success—both at the box office and with critics—paved the way for a planned trilogy all helmed by director Jerrold Tarog. The second movie is Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral and the third one will be about Manuel L. Quezon (who is played by Benjamin Alves in the first two films).
The list of cinemas that will be screening Heneral Luna on August 29 is yet to be announced.
