(SPOT.ph) Calling all movie enthusiasts! Do you love watching local indie films? Well, here's your chance to watch two flicks from the Father of Philippine Independent Cinema himself, as the Ateneo Art Gallery hosts Kidlat Revisited, a series of free public screenings of renowned artist and filmmaker Kidlat Tahimik's films starting April 25 and running through June. (Did we mention it's free?)

Recognized as a proponent of the development of local alternative cinema by many of his peers in the movie industry, Kidlat Tahimik (born Eric de Guia) is an avant-garde filmmaker whose works aim to critique neocolonialist structures. A proponent of indigenous culture and concepts, Tahimik's works have won several accolades, both locally and abroad.

Two of Tahimik's films will be screened for the first leg of the series this week. Mababangong Bangungot (1975), which won the International Critics' Award at the Berlin Film Festival, portrays the disillusionment of a jeepney driver in Paris, who finds out the Western world is not as exciting as he thought it would be. On the other hand, Turumba (1981), which won Best Third World Film at the 1983 Mannheim-Heidelberg Film Festival, follows the struggles of a small paper-mache-making town as they attempt to fulfill the 25,000-figurine order of a capitalist German businesswoman.

Additionally, you can also catch a glimpse of the artist at work as he recreates his art installation "WW3 - The Protracted Kultur War" (which was seen at Art Fair Philippines 2018) at Arete's Unionbank Plaza.

KIDLAT REVISITED: Public Screenings of Kidlat Tahimik Films will be launched on April 25, at the Ben Chan ArtSuite, 2/F Arts Wing, Areté. Mababangong Bangungot will be screened at 2 p.m. and Turumba at 5 p.m. You can reserve your seats online.
