City mosque in Kota Kinabalu
(SPOT.ph) Sabah, a state of Malaysia on Borneo Island, is one of the closest neighbors of the Philippines via Luzon's island of Palawan. It's also an underrated destination despite the natural sights and cultural spots that Kota Kinabalu, the state's capital, has to offer. Hoping to boost both Malaysia's and the Philippines' tourism industries, the two countries are now linked via ferry connections from Buliluyan Port in Palawan and Kudat Port in Sabah.
In an exchange with SPOT.ph, Director Danilo Intong of the Department of Tourism in the MIMAROPA Region confirmed reports that the ferry service was supposed to have started in December 2017 but was moved to the third or fourth week of February 2018. This was after the tourism office suggested active participation of local government units and stakeholders, and more time was needed to iron out the details of the partnership. Issues regarding immigration, customs, and quarantine are also being figured out.
Sabah, Malaysia
From Puerto Princesa, land travel would take five hours to the municipality of Bataraza where the port is located. Sea travel to Sabah would take six hours through the Fast Cat Ferry. This vessel can accommodate up to 275 passengers, 35 vehicles, and 12 cargo trucks. It will leave Buliluyan Port in the morning and arrive at Kudat Port at noon, then travel back to Palawan in the afternoon.
