(SPOT.ph) Elmer Borlongan is one of the celebrated Filipino contemporary artists, and seeing a comprehensive survey of his body of works is a privilege that anyone shouldn't miss—especially if it's free (on select days). This extraordinary opportunity is about to come true by January 20 as the Metropolitan Museum of Manila opens An Extraordinary Eye for the Ordinary, an exhibit of his artworks spanning over 20 years.

Curated by Dr. Ambeth Ocampo, the works highlight what Borlongan is most known for: Representational figures of the everyday Filipino reeking of a strong sense of social consciousness. It also shows how the artist's environment, from growing up and living in the populated streets of Mandaluyong to moving to the fields of Zambales as an adult, has affected his poetics.

Borlongan studied under Fernando Sena, considered the Father of the Philippine Art Workshop. After graduating from the University of the Philippines-Diliman, he became a member of Artista ng Bayan, an activist art collective that creates street murals and effigies on various social causes. This was where he met fellow artists Mark Justiniani and Manuel Garibay. The three also went on to collaborate on politically charged artworks as key members of Salingpusa and Sanggawa.

Extraordinary Eye for the Ordinary runs from January 22 to March 28 at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, BSP Complex, Roxas Boulevard, Malate, Manila. Entrance is free during the opening reception on January 20 at 5 p.m. and every Tuesday. Regular admission is at P100 (Monday, Wednesday to Sunday). For more information, follow the event page on Facebook.
