(SPOT.ph) The new year often means new beginnings. A chance to do things all over again, complete what was once left unfinished, and make amends. For the start of 2018, various exhibits in the Metro show us what it means to be reborn—a celebration of life through landscape paintings, a bright future through a play on light and shadow, and zooming in on details we used to ignore.

Distracted 100

Facebook, Netflix, and a whole slew of other apps—these are our constant distractions. But artists have always dealt with distractions, including (but not limited to) troubling issues, loneliness, day jobs, and life in general. Distracted 100 shows how 21 Filipino artists turn interruptions into moments of creation, and how they don't always need to be avoided.

The exhibit runs until January 25 at Mono8 Gallery, 1A Casa Tesoro Mansion, 1335 Mabini Street, Malate, Manila. For more information, follow Mono8 Gallery on Facebook.

Salvage Projects

How often do you think about the story of the busy city you’re living in? Intermedia artist Mark Salvatus continues this discourse on urbanization and the socio-economic landscape manifested through his art. In Salvage Projects, he uses familiar and found objects to emphasize inbalance in the distribution of land, as well as in opportunities.

The exhibit runs from January 13 to February 10 at 1335 Mabini, C1B Karrivin Plaza, 2316 Chino Roces Avenue Extension, Makati City. For more information, visit 1335's website.

Ugat

Artist Raffy Napay presents his largest weave painting to date, at approximately 8 x 42 feet, in Ugat. It stands as an anchor piece and creates a whole landscape of foliage filling the gallery space. The rest of his show explores ugat (Filipino for root or vein) as a metaphor for human relations and interconnectedness.

The exhibit runs from January 13 to February 10 at Silverlens, Lapanday Center, 2263 Don Chino Roces Avenue Extension, Makati City. For more information, visit Silverlens' website.

"Bloom" by Herbert Consunji Jr.

Paths of Light

Abstract artist Herbert Consunji Jr. presents 11 paintings that depict images of heads and figures set in ambiguous spaces and landscapes. With these artworks, he explores the mystery of creation, multiple realities, and the ephemerality of life. He also emphasizes the significance of light as means to express emotion by manipulating shadows, contrast, and other abstract elements in his art.

The exhibit runs from January 10 to 20 at Galerie Joaquin, 3/F The Podium, ADB Avenue, Ortigas Center, Mandaluyong City. For more information, follow Galerie Joaquin on Facebook.

I’ve Been Hiding in the Smallest Places

Sour Grapes

Food is often associated with desire. In Sour Grapes, artist Lenny Leonor challenges the viewers' desire through images of food even with the knowledge that the paintings are not real. The title of the exhibit is inspired by one of Aesop's fables, The Fox and the Grapes, in which the fox would rather claim that the grapes he wanted are undesirable than admit that he had failed to get them.

The exhibit runs from January 13 to February 3 at Underground Gallery, 2/F Makati Cinema Square, 2130 Don Chino Roces Avenue, Makati City. For more information, follow Underground Gallery on Facebook.

Black and White

Most choices in life are either this or that, or at least that’s what we hope. Artists Nice Buenaventura, Mars Bugaoan, Gab Baez, Jacob Lindo, Isha Naguiat, and Miles Villanueva come together in a group show to explore this relentless insistence on the binaries of things. Black and White, as with the presence and absence of color and light, symbolizes and questions the notion of binary as the core definition of identity and being.

The exhibit runs from January 12 to February 7 at Vinyl on Vinyl, 2241 Pasillo 18 La Fuerza Compound, Chino Roces Avenue, Makati City. For more information, visit Vinyl on Vinyl's website.
