(SPOT.ph) The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board approved on the evening of July 4 a petition to increase the minimum fare of public utility jeepneys to P9. The jeepney fare hike is set to take effect in the afternoon of July 5 in Metro Manila, Central Luzon, and Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal at Quezon).

The last fare increase for public utility jeepneys happened in 2017, when the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) set it at P8. The decision was made by the LTFRB on July 4 after a series of 12 hearings. The original petition submitted by various transport groups was a P2 fare hike, which would increase the minimum fare to P10. The P9 fare hike covers the minimum jeepney fare for the passenger's first four kilometers.

But don't hand over an extra peso to your jeepney driver just yet—according to the LTFRB, the fare increase can only be implemented once an official order is released. An official statement regarding the fare hike from the LTFRB is expected within the day.
