(SPOT.ph) Bacolod City in Negros Occidental is not only known for its sweet treats and delicious chicken inasal, but also for hosting Masskara Festival, which is one of the grandest and most colorful events in the Philippines. After all, this tourist destination is known as the City of Smiles, and the province's biggest party is no different. So if you're planning to attend the festival this October, there's a new place to stay in Bacolod during festival season—Seda Capitol Central, which just opened in April.
A Festival Born From a Crisis
Bacolod City was in the grip of a crisis in 1980 after the prices of sugar—Negros Occidental's main source of income—plummeted. As if to make things worse, more than 700 lives were lost when a first-class passenger vessel collided with an oil tanker in Tablas Strait while traveling from Manila to Bacolod.
To lift the people’s morale and somehow change the gloomy atmosphere in the City of Smiles, the local government and civil groups organized a festival reminiscent of Rio Carnival in Brazil. Every 4th Sunday of October, Bacolodnons would wear funny-looking masks and colorful costumes, hoping that the smiles and laughter that they were once known for would return.
Activities, such as street dancing and parades, are held along Lacson Street. It's also turned into the center of all festivities as food stalls, stages for bands and DJs, and mobile bars line up along the road during Masskara weekend.

Bacolod's Newest Party Center
With its location along Lacson Street, it’s only apt that Seda Capitol Center has a vibrant rooftop bar where Masskara attendees can continue the all-day and all-night celebration. Launched on June 29, Straight Up offers stunning views of the city, al fresco seating, and non-stop partying led by their resident DJ.
