(SPOT.ph) We may all be enjoying the summer sun right now, but get ready for the influx of rain showers come June. Coupled with a poor drainage system, monsoon season is not exactly kind to Metro Manila—especially the valley of Marikina. But that all may change in the near future as the Department of Public Works and Highways, in partnership with the Japan International Cooperation Agency, inaugurated the third phase of the Pasig-Marikina River Channel Improvement Project on April 29. The project aims to significantly reduce the extent of flood damage in the Metro through implementing channel improvement works in both the Pasig and Marikina rivers.
Financed by a loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the cost of the project amounts to P6.97 billion. This covers the construction and improvement of dikes and drainage outlets, as well as the partial dredging of the Marikina River.
Marikina is definitely no stranger to floods—during the onslaught of typhoons, the city is known to endure sudden flooding due to the overflowing of the Marikina River. This results in the submerging of streets and the forced evacuation of thousands, particularly seen during Tropical Storm Ondoy in 2009.
