(SPOT.ph) Quiapo, often referred to as Old Downtown of Manila, is one of the busiest districts in the city. It's home to Quiapo Church, where hundreds of devotees flock every Friday; Plaza Miranda, which was a popular site of political rallies in the 1950s; mosques; and a whole market perfect for bargain hunting. The streets can be overwhelming, but it sure deserves an informative tour for the unfamiliar traveler—a service offered by the group Manila for a Day.
Called Colors of Manila, it gives tourists a different perspective of what used to be Manila's central hub for trade and cultural exchange. The tour lasts for three and a half hours, and starts at the First United Building, which housed the Berg Department Store in the 1930s. Other places of interest include Plaza Lacson, Plaza Miranda, Quiapo Underpass, The Golden Mosque, and Quinta Wet Market. Part of the tour is a sampling of Filipino halal food, which gives you a taste of what the Southern Philippines has to offer—without having to fly all the way to Mindanao.
Manila for a Day also offers tours in Intramuros (touching on the Spanish colonial period), the National Museum of Fine Arts (art appreciation), and the Ayala Museum (history of pre-colonial Philippines).
