When furnishing a own condo unit or city home, we tend to veer towards safe choices when shopping, and often end up with cookie-cutter interiors that are no different from the next: beige sofas, white walls, and bland decor.

This may change with Commune, a newly opened furniture store in Shangri-La Plaza Mall. The design and lifestyle brand is from Singapore and has branches all over Asia. No cookie-cutter furniture here—what you'll see are original designs of modern and versatile pieces for the urban dweller. "We believe our furniture represents the changing tastes of younger generations," says Gan Shee Wen, sales and marketing director of Commune. "And we wish to introduce a home-making lifestyle that is ethical, sustainable, yet trendy and chic."

Here's what to expect at the sprawling showroom:

The store is arranged in home-like vignettes

Sleek, clean-lined furniture pieces with Scandinavian, mid-century modern, and industrial references are arranged in stylish vignettes throughout the store, and each with its own color theme (celery green and natural wood, gray with walnut wood, deep burgundy and mahogany, and so forth). These arrangements show customers how the pieces would look in each room, and how each collection works with the accessories and lighting on hand. You can get a lot of design ideas here!

The materials and processes are all environment-friendly.

The wood used in the furnishings are from sustainable sources in the U.S., Southeast Asia, and Europe. "We focus on wood furniture, minimizing lead and formaldehyde content in the production for environmental safety purposes, as well as focus on natural materials that are friendly to the environment," says Gan. You can even find in the store framed posters that describe the furniture piece's journey in detail, from the design process to the manufacturing steps.

Decorative accessories, lighting, art, and even scents can be mixed or matched.

Aside from the floor-to-ceiling shelves stocked with assorted decorative accessories that are on-trend but versatile, you can shop for the lamps, pillows, signature scents (which you can smell and experience throughout the store), and artwork arranged within the vignettes.

They also offer interior planning services.

The store also offers 3D design and visualization services to help shoppers plan their furniture layouts and choices properly. "3D technologies are game changers," enthuses Gan. "You need to keep an eye on them and embrace them."

There's a cafe to complete the experience.

Before you decide on one of their cozy sectional sofas, grab a cup of coffee at the café situated by the store's entrance. The café is a nice, thoughtful touch that adds a homey atmosphere to the shop.

Commune is at 6/L Shangri-La Plaza East Wing, Mandaluyong City. For more information, log on to Commune's Facebook page or website.
