(SPOT.ph) It feels like only yesterday when we all saw Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) finally meet the Mother of Dragons herself, Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) in Game of Thrones. While the last season definitely elicited some mixed reactions (come on, they're aunt and nephew!), that still won't stop fans from counting down the days until winter a.k.a. the eighth and last season finally comes. (That's in 2019, btw.)
It's undeniably a long wait. The same goes for The Winds of Winter, the next book in A Song of Fire and Ice series, which is what Game of Thrones (GoT) is based on. Martin announced in April that it'll also be coming out in 2019. But you can at least read one of his earlier works in the meantime—The Ice Dragon, which was published in 1980, 16 years before A Song of Ice and Fire came out.
The long, seemingly endless wait for both the new season and the new book isn't the only reason you should be picking up the fantasy novella written for children. It's also going to be made into an animated movie that Martin himself is also producing. (Fingers crossed he has enough time to finish everything on time!) The story revolves around a young girl called Adara, who lives in a world where kingdoms at war use the powers of dragon who can breathe fire. But after her mother dies, Adara secretly becomes friends with an ice dragon.
Martin clarifies that the novella isn't set in the same world as the Seven Kingdoms. But with a medieval setting, kingdoms heading into battle, and huge dragons, the story and the movie is something to keep GoT fans happy until 2019.
