(SPOT.ph) “Ang Huling El Bimbo,” which was composed by Ely Buendia of Eraserheads, first caught the airwaves in 1996 and has since earned top spots and awards in the local and international music scene. Its video, directed by Auraeus Solito, gained equal success and won the International Viewer's Choice Awards for Asia at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards in New York City. It's been more than two decades since the song was released but its words are still sung by different generations—yes, including the Gen Z; probably more so now that Resorts World Manila came out with a music video for Ang Huling El Bimbo, a musical told through songs of the influential ‘90s rock band. It opens on July 20 at Newport Performing Arts Theater.
The seven-minute video features what theatergoers can expect for the upcoming show—a different arrangement of well-loved songs made possible by the talent of musical director Myke Salomon. There's also a mashup towards the end, as lines of “Ligaya” and “Alapaap” were also thrown in with the legendary song. The behind-the-scenes and recording video is led by Ang Huling El Bimbo cast members Gian Magdangal, OJ Mariano, and Jon Santos. It also presents the vocal prowess of Miss Saigon alumni Tanya Manalang and veteran theater actress Sheila Francisco. Reb Atadero, Topper Fabregas, Boo Gabunada, and Jamie Wilson round up the cast.
Ang Huling El Bimbo runs from July 20 to August 26 at the Newport Performing Arts Theater, Resorts World Manila, Newport Boulevard, Pasay City. Tickets, priced from P1,000 to P3,500, are available through Ticketworld.
