(SPOT.ph) After its successful run at the 68th Berlin International Film Festival last February, Lav Diaz’s critically-acclaimed film Ang Panahon ng Halimaw (Season of the Devil) finally makes it way to the Philippines. The four-hour rock opera, which features 33 songs all composed by Diaz, will make its local debut at the UP Cine Adarna on April 20, 5 p.m. for P250 per ticket.

Starring Piolo Pascual, Shaina Magdayao, Pinky Amador, Bituin Escalante, and Angel Aquino, the musical has been described by critics as a social commentary on extrajudicial killings of the present despite the film being set in the 70s. The story revolves around Hugo (Pascual), a poet who looks for his missing wife Lorena (Magdayao), an idealistic doctor who set out to work in a province. Hugo soon learns of the harsh realities of the country, where a state-sanctioned militia runs amok and kills suspected rebels indiscriminately.

Ang Panahon ng Halimaw earned raves from international critics. The Hollywood Reporter dubbed the film as “among Diaz’s best work” visually.
