(SPOT.ph) Throughout the years, leading men from Pinoy movies have captured the hearts—not to mention the money—of moviegoers. And just like their characters in the movies, their real lives can get so hectic that it's hard to keep up with what they're up to nowadays. So, we list down some of the industry's favorite leading men and the highlights of their colorful careers to keep you up-to-date.
As a five-time “Box-Office King” awardee, John Lloyd Cruz has had more than 10 movies reach the illustrious P100 million mark. While it may not be as quotable as its predecessor One More Chance, 2015’s A Second Chance raked in P556 million. It was distributed in the United Kingdom for two weekends by Vue Entertainment, the first Filipino movie to get that kind of exposure. The story revolves around Popoy (Cruz) and Basha’s (Bea Alonzo) attempt to keep their marriage alive after going through financial problems. Meanwhile, Cruz’s It Takes a Man and a Woman with Sarah Geronimo hit P405 million and their 2017 movie, Finally Found Someone hit P316 million.
Cruz has earned more than his fair share of time away from the spotlight and the big screen and is taking an indefinite leave of absence from showbiz. He’s also reportedly going to be a father to (rumored girlfriend) Ellen Adarna’s (also not officially confirmed, but reported) child.
A lot of actors’ names might make hordes of fans scream their hearts out, but none of them are as timeless as Piolo Pascual. His star power, together with Toni Gonzaga’s own in a remarkable love story about two former lovers stuck between the past and the present definitely makes for a great movie. So great, in fact, that Starting Over Again earned P410 million and hauled U.S. $2 million overseas. Pascual also starred in 2016’s The Breakup Playlist with Sarah Geronimo (which also crossed the P100-million mark, btw).
He’s since appeared in award-winning auteur Lav Diaz’s Hele sa Hiwagang Hapis alongside John Lloyd Cruz. But he’s also been exploring roles behind the camera as an owner-slash-producer of Spring Films, helming indie films like Kita Kita and Meet Me in St. Gallen.
Though he doesn’t appear in as many films as his contemporaries, Jericho Rosales remains a household name and the box-office numbers for his movies—few as they are—prove it. His entry to the Metro Manila Film Festival in 2015, the romantic drama-comedy #WalangForever, was one of the top-performing movies of the competition that year though the official earnings of all movies were never officially disclosed. He once again participated in the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) in 2016 with his appearance in Ang Babae sa Septic Tank 2.
He’s been pretty low-key throughout the past few years but you’ll see him busying it up with his hobbies and charity efforts on his social media accounts (and maybe a few viral photos here and there). He recently made waves as part of the MMFF 2017 with Paul Soriano’s Siargao, which made P80 million.
It seems that every year, Derek Ramsay has been hitting the big screen movie after movie. Though he wasn’t exactly the leading man in the movie, he does play Benjie’s (Vice Ganda) love interest in Praybeyt Benjamin, which racked up P402 million. He did, however, top bill 2011’s No Other Woman alongside Anne Curtis and Cristine Reyes, raking in P278 million. In 2012, he came out with another movie about relationships and third parties with Anne Curtis (again) and Andi Eigenmann. A Secret Affair garnered P118 million at the box office.
It seems that sexually-charged films are the way to go for Ramsay (no surprise there, tbh) since Ex With Benefits with Coleen Garcia reached P145 million. The official earnings of his rom-com with Jennylyn Mercado, English Only, Please, weren't officially disclosed but it did reach the top 4 of the MMFF in 2014. He’s set to star in a Star Cinema film called Kasal with Bea Alonzo and Paulo Avelino, which is slated to be released in 2018.
There’s very little doubt over Dingdong Dantes’ timeless star power that’s kept him at the top of the game with a lot of his movies going past the P100 million mark. But while Dantes is known mainly as one of the faces of GMA-7, some of his biggest movies are actually produced by Star Cinema, the production company of ABS-CBN. Segunda Mano, an entry at the 2012 Metro Manila Film Festival, earned P126 million. She’s the One, a romance-drama he starred in alongside Bea Alonzo and Enrique Gil, reached P137 million. One More Try, which he co-starred in with Angel Locsin, Angelica Panganiban, and Zanjoe Marudo, grossed P213 million against a budget of just P15 million. Dantes once again shared the screen with Panganiban in The Unmarried Wife, garnering P246.3 million against a budget of P17 million. His latest offering alongside Star Cinema, Seven Sundays, grossed a whopping P271 million.
It looks like Dantes will continue having box-office hits under Star Cinema as he is once again set to star in a movie helmed by the production company. It is reportedly going to be directed by Olivia M. Lamasan.
When he’s not busy competing in triathlons and being fit AF, Gerald Anderson top bills memorable rom-coms. One of his best-known roles is as Bogs in 2010’s Paano na Kaya, which he starred in with then-girlfriend Kim Chiu. In 2015, he starred in Everyday I Love You with Liza Soberano and Enrique Gil, which made P178 million throughout its run. His 2016 movie with Arci Muñoz, Always Be My Maybe, also passed the P100 million mark at P105 million.
Meanwhile, his other movie from 2016 with rumored girlfriend Bea Alonzo, How to Be Yours, reportedly garnered P153 million. Anderson’s interest in triathlons was reflected in the teleserye Ikaw Lang ang Iibigin, his reunion project with ex-girlfriend Chiu, which ended in January 2018.
Though his movies from the late 2000s didn’t always reach the P100 million mark, it was obvious that Sam Milby was already one of the biggest names in Pinoy rom-coms in the late 2000s, with movies like My Big Love, And I Love You So, Babe I Love You, and even Four Sisters and a Wedding. But he also set his eyes on Hollywood when he auditioned for roles in 2012, then stayed in Los Angeles for networking and classes in 2015.
He also starred in the daytime show Doble Kara in 2015, but while he pursued his Hollywood dreams, his lead roles in Ex with Benefits and English Only, Please went to Derek Ramsay. Still, Milby insists that he’d rather “look forward and give thanks to other blessings.” Those blessings being his movie with Jennylyn Mercado, The Prenup, which made more than P110 million, as well as 2016’s The Third Party, which also raked in P110 million. Milby was supposedly set to star in a teleserye called Written in Our Stars alongside Piolo Pascual, Toni Gonzaga, and Sarah Lahbati, but the project was put on hold. Milby is set to star in a movie called Ang Pambansang Thirdwheel with Yassi Pressman.
Paulo Avelino sent hearts fluttering when he starred in I’m Drunk, I Love You alongside Maja Salvador. But moviegoers already had their eyes set on him when he appeared as Gregorio del Pilar a.k.a. Goyo in Heneral Luna, which at one point was the highest-grossing indie movie with P256 million. Avelino’s filmography also includes the box-office hit, The Unmarried Wife, which he starred in with Angelica Panganiban and Dingdong Dantes.
Avelino has since starred in the movie-musical Ang Larawan, which won Best Picture at the MMFF. He’s also set to reprise his role as Gregorio del Pilar in Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral, the sequel to 2015's Heneral Luna.
Antoinette Jadaone’s That Thing Called Tadhana was, like Heneral Luna, at one point the highest-grossing indie film, reaching a gross revenue of P134 million with only a budget of P2 million. Aside from box-office success, the film also received critical praise, and fans wanted more from the leads, Angelica Panganiban and JM de Guzman. But soon after, de Guzman entered rehab for drug addiction, and his upcoming projects were taken on by other actors, like Rocco Nacino in Pedro Calungsod: Batang Martir, and Jericho Rosales in #WalangForever.
After two years out of the spotlight, de Guzman is now making a showbiz comeback. He’s signed on with Star Cinema to star in Precious Hearts Romances’ Araw Gabi alongside Barbie Imperial. A sequel to That Thing Called Tadhana is also reportedly in the works.
Kita Kita is one of the most notable sleeper hits in Pinoy cinema, but after rave reviews kept coming in, it then became even more popular. It went on to become the highest-grossing indie film in the Philippines with a whopping P320 million gross and with only a P10 million budget. It catapulted its leads Alessandra de Rossi and Empoy Marquez to stardom, with fans avidly waiting to see them again—whether it was to be an individual project or one that reunited them both.
Fans looked forward to Marquez’s action-comedy movie with first-time director Dennis Padilla called The Barker. He stars as the titular barker who falls in love with a beautiful girl played by Shy Carlos. The film received generally negative reviews. Marquez was supposed to star in a movie with Ellen Adarna, but Adarna has kept a low profile ever since news broke about her reported pregnancy. Marquez is still working on another project with Zanjoe Marudo called Kusina Kings, which will be directed by Victor Villanueva (Patay na Si Hesus).
