(SPOT.ph) When Disney's The Lion King premiered on Broadway in 1997, it bagged the Tony award for Best Costume Design for a Musical—a much-deserved recognition for director Julie Taymor and production designer Michael Curry. New Amsterdam Theater in New York magically turned into Pride Rock with actors and actresses wearing masks, donning life-size animal costumes, and controlling hand-held puppets. Shadow puppetry is also thrown in to the mix, an homage to the oldest form of puppetry in the world. It was a sight to behold and this was continued with the many productions that followed, including the upcoming international tour that premieres in Manila on March 18.

Excited as we are for the show, we took a peek inside the rehearsal hall of The Lion King. Watch the video and prepare to be instantly awed as Tim Lucas and Mike Grimm of the puppet department demonstrate the coolest things about the musical's masks and puppets.

The Lion King runs from March 18 to May 6 at The Theatre at Solaire, Solaire Resort and Casino, 1 Aseana Avenue, Parañaque City. Tickets, priced from P1,900 to P7,250, are available through Ticketworld.
