(SPOT.ph) It's been a while since we last saw the love team of Liza Soberano and Enrique Gil on the small screen. While Liza has been busy shooting the latest movie adaptation of Darna with Erik Matti, Enrique recently starred in the family drama Seven Sundays. The duo's teleserye together was 2016's rom-com series, Dolce Amore.
Fans were excited to learn that the two will have a brand new teleserye, this time an action-packed fantasy series called Bagani. In a report by ABS-CBN, Enrique expounds about the show's premise, saying, "Para siyang bayani. It’s the story about how the Philippines—‘di ba archipelagic tayo—how the Philippines was born. It’s about our culture."
The teleserye is set to premiere on March 5, but it has already drawn flak on social media for its casting choices after the release of its teaser. Social media users argue that a show about a prehistoric Philippines shouldn't have cast actors with foreign features. Some even took a jab at the makeup used by the actors to make them appear darker.
lizquen, w their pointy nose, white skin, foreign look, and their filipino accent as the main cast of bagani, a philippine mythology set in pre-colonial times ??? it doesnt add up! pic.twitter.com/EXXmUu7vof

Don't brown face to serve majority of a population that are naturally brown skinned.

To condescend on your own kind this way and scream PiNoy PriDE in your station IDs AND call them "family" is blatantly stupid and insulting.
Katawa na ang diwa ng series na to ay pre-Philippine myths and history tapos lead cast nilang 4 mas mestiso pa sa labanos. Ang malala parang sinawsaw lang sila sa arnibal masabi lang na kayumanggi. Keep on perpetuating internalized colorism, Philippine TV ???? https://t.co/hEg9meInX2

: Eto na lang. I think "demonizing and shaming mestizos" is a reach. Nobody's saying it's their fault they're halfies, or that they're ugly. But the reality of the matter is that mestizos and mestizas get more career opportunities in front of the camera. That's how it works.

Others also suggested a replacement for the cast, citing Ylona Garcia, who was actually originally considered for a role, but had to back out due to scheduling conflicts.

Meanwhile, fans of the duo argue that Bagani isn't about pre-colonial Philippines (in contrast to Enrique's earlier interview), but rather, about fantasy myths in the Philippines.
Your whole argument is based on the assumption that Bagani is a historical fiction about pre-colonial Filipinos. It’s not. It’s a fantasy universe inspired by Philippine mythology. Much like LoTR with roots from Norse & Old English myths or GoT inspired by Celtic & Greek myths.
