January may have been a crazy month, but at least it’s ending with something cool—a super blue blood moon. If this sounds like a mouthful, it’s because it’s a combination of three lunar events happening at once: A supermoon, a blood moon, and a blue moon.
A supermoon occurs when the moon is at its perigee, or the point in its orbit that is closest to the Earth. According to Space.com, a super moon can “appear up to 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than usual.”
When a full moon occurs two times within a month, that’s called a blue moon—hence the common expression “Once in a blue moon.” A blood moon, as its name suggests, happens when the moon takes on a striking orange or red tint during a lunar eclipse. While the moon is completely covered by the Earth’s shadow, light from the Earth’s sunrise and sunset shines on the surface of the moon, giving it its reddish appearance.
