(SPOT.ph) Going out of town is always fun with the gang, but sometimes you just need to do your own Eat Pray Love or Wild for some serious soul-searching or even just your usual breather. It has its upside, too—no waiting around for friends to file their vacation leaves, no endless "Kailan ka pwede?" so that everyone can join in, no adjusting the itinerary to fit everyone's interests, and so on. This is probably why, in a global study by online travel booking platform Agoda, there's a 45% increase in one-person bookings since 2016.

The data collated between January 2016 and December 2017 covered both domestic and international bookings. Angeles in Pampanga ranked first as a popular local destination. Japan, on the other hand, was the top international spot for Filipino solo travelers. Palawan, Batangas, Taiwan, South Korea, and Indonesia join the list of the favorite places for those going solo. Google also reports that "solo travel" was the most searched phrase in July 2017.

"As the far-flung corners of the world are becoming easier to reach, travelers are more willing to experience destinations with the freedom that comes from traveling alone, allowing them to fully immerse themselves amongst a new culture. Solo travelers can completely absorb the culture of their chosen destination and make choices based on their own preferred experiences, creating a whole new sense of freedom," explained Andrew Edwards, agoda's Global Director for Brand and Communications, in a press release on January 23.

Indeed, this shift in the way Filipinos travel opens more doors in how we experience a destination.
