(SPOT.ph) “I'll get fit in 2018,” you say in yet another attempt at being more active in the new year. Problem is, the TRAIN tax law is in effect, and that means you’re probably too broke for the gym. But don’t cry just yet! The best things in life are for free, and that includes exercising in public places.
Here, we give you a list of free spaces where you can do a lot more than jog. Warning: They can get crowded.
Blue Bay Walk
Diosdado Macapagal Boulevard, Pasay City
Activities that you can try: Yoga, volleyball, badminton, biking, frisbee, and jogging
The park at Blue Bay Walk, line with restaurants and shops, is Pasay’s best-kept secret. Weekends can get busy and packed, but on weekday late afternoons, you can challenge fellow fitness buffs into a friendly match of volleyball or badminton. If you’re there on a Monday, pack your yoga mat for an outdoor sesh.
Anda Street Basketball Courts
Anda Street, Intramuros, Manila City
Activities that you can try: Basketball, jogging, and biking
Surprisingly, Anda Street’s fenced-in basketball courts are open to the public. You don't have to reserve a slot and you can just team up with strangers or you wait out the current game. For an extra workout, you can always bike around Intramuros.
Mall of Asia Seaside
SM by the Bay, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City
Activities that you can try: Zumba, volleyball, badminton, jogging, frisbee, and biking
Zumba classes by the seaside are famously known for being free, which is why weekend mornings are a crowd favorite. Double the fun by taking your friends with you and encouraging them to bust a move or two. After the workout, start another round of exercise with a game of volleyball.
BGC Greenway Linear Park
3 McKinley Road, Makati City
Activities that you can try: Jogging and biking
Are you the kind of runner who always gets lost? If no, then you should try Greenway Park. Sandwiched between residential buildings, offices, and a golf course, this pathway is the metro’s longest linear park at 1.6 kilometers. Be sure to have water with you because you’ll be needing it even before you reach the end.
Marikina River Park
300 Shoe Avenue, Sto. Nino, Marikina City
Activities that you can try: Zumba, jogging, frisbee, and biking
Biking is heavily promoted in Marikina, and it’s evident at Marikina River Park’s bicycle station. Tag along on a biker group’s route and enjoy the scenic river view. After some rounds, you can join the park’s free Zumba class, held every weekend. The management also allows dogs, so feel free to ‘aww’ at their cuteness all while being active.
Quezon City Memorial Circle
Diliman, Quezon City
Activities that you can try: Cycling, calisthenics, badminton, frisbee, and jogging. Zumba, aerobics and tai chi are only free for senior citizens.
No budget for a gym membership? Quezon City Memorial Circle has a simple gym equipment you can use for free. You can also join the zumba and tai chi lessons in the morning
Legazpi Active Park
Rada corner Gamboa Streets, Legazpi Village, Makati City
Activities that you can try: Calisthenics, yoga, jogging, frisbee, and cycling
Although smaller in size compared to its neighboring parks, Legazpi Active Park is quiet and shaded with trees, best for people who like yoga. This newly renovated park also has a fun jogging path that’s marked with suggested points for starting and finishing. Its playground can also be used for calisthenics, especially the metal bars of the slide’s stairs.
Manila Baywalk
Roxas Boulevard, Malate, Manila City
Activities that you can try: Jogging, aerobics, tai chi, and cycling
The sunset at Manila Bay is a classic, and so is jogging along the baywalk. After its much needed facelift, runners and cyclists can be seen racing the walkway again, just like old times. Group exercises can be found in different parts of the bay, and most are free. Be on the lookout!
Harbour Square
CCP Complex, Pedro Bukaneg Street, Manila City
Activities that you can try: Jogging and biking
Sunsets and docked yachts are the everyday view at Harbor Square, and it’s also the perfect backdrop for your mandatory sweaty selfie. You can play sports, but mostly ones that require only two to four people. For cycling beginners, the space is good enough for a lesson or two.
Luneta Park
Roxas Boulevard, Ermita, Manila City
Activities that you can try: Zumba, aerobics, tai chi, calisthenics, volleyball, badminton, basketball, jogging, frisbee, and cycling
There’s a reason why marathon trainers and athletes frequent the national park, and you should, too. Luneta Park’s sprawling greenery enables you to run smoothly and lets you set your own pace. The park is also home to various activities like Zumba classes, tai chi, and aerobics, to name a few. Give badminton or frisbee a try here, as it’s not too windy like most parks.
