(SPOT.ph) Latin American food is known for bold flavors, enticing everyone into a spice-filled love affair. It’s just the perfect choice whether you’re a foodie with a refined palate or just someone who knows when to say a dish is “Delicioso!” Want to try something new? Check out Latin American food with a twist at Alegria Conzinha Moderna & Sangria Bar.

Stepping inside Alegria (which is Portuguese for "joy" or "happiness") is like discovering a festive party. It’s visually appealing with a wall mural by Kookoo Ramos, colorful, statement chairs, and a bar decked out in neon lights. Also adding a pop of color are their dainty hanging plants. It’s a nice touch that makes the overall ambience more refreshing and inviting.

The kitchen is headed by Chef Charles Montanez, who churns out dishes that meld the bold flavors of Latin American fare with a hint of vibrant Asian flavors—definitely an intriguing mix to tickle your taste buds. “I’ve always wanted to have my own restaurant when I hit 30 and it feels great seeing my vision come to life. It was easy for me to come up with this concept—menu first then pegs for the interiors and we were good to go,” shared Chef Charles.

Elote Con Chicharrones

A decadent start to your meal is their very own version of elote (corn on the cob). Grilled to perfection, the Elote Con Chicharrones (P150) is slathered with torched cilantro cream, kesong puti, and adobo pork crackling crust. It looks simple but the complex notes of creamy, charred, and slightly nutty with unexpected crunch is an absolute delight.

Alma Koreana

Mi Japones

The Alma Koreana (P180) with prawn, raw corn tortilla, squid-ink batter, napcha kimchi, ssamjang aioli, and smoked esquites is so good you’ll be tempted to chomp yours in half with one bite. There’s also the Mi Japones (P180), full of Japanese flavors with Misono steak, wasabi aioli, and nori crisps, plus smoked esquites, roasted peppers, tortilla, and tomato salsa. Both the Alma Koreana and Mi Japones feature Chef Charles' unique tortilla recipe: “Tortilla is made of a dry ingredient which is corn flour and wet ingredient which is water. Our tortilla is different because I extract the juices from the corn and then I mix it with normal flour so it’s more flavorful.

Fajita Moderna

Chicken Churrascaria

For the extra hungry, you can’t go wrong with the Fajita Moderna (P420), loaded with steak fajita, coconut mashed potato, red onion petal, chimichurri, mango salsa, and baby elote. There’s also the Chicken Churrascaria (P395) or a Peruvian quarter chicken that’s golden, juicy, and just the perfect size to enjoy.

(Left to right) Sangria Vermelha, Sangria Verde, Cava Sangria

Alegria is the first sangria bar in BGC and you definitely shouldn’t miss trying at least one on their list. For an easy drink that’s light but full-flavored, get the Cava Sangria (P300) with Cava wine, gin, and passion fruit. The unmistakable aroma of passion fruit will remind you of tropical vacations.

Another refreshing choice is the Sangria Verde (P250) with Moscato, gin, kiwi, and cucumber. If you’re more into red wine, order a glass of Sangria Vermelha (P250) with red wine, gin, blackberry, and lavender. It has a pleasant tartness complemented with a light aromatic flavor from the lavender.

Fusions are a tricky thing to pull off, but Alegria proves that when you do it right, you can be rewarded with full-bodied flavors. With their unique but ultimately tasty fare and lots of sangria, Alegria may just be what you need after a long day of hard work.
